Best Role Yet, a Dentist’s Perspective on Education

Dr. Herro has been inside the school walls for many, many years…probably more than he would like to count. From his education leading up to his 2005 graduation from Creighton Dental School to his oral surgery and anesthesia training in both San Francisco and New Jersey. And for the past several years while successfully building his own practice, Dental on Central, Dr. Herro has chosen to dive back into the dental education system in the role of faculty member at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health since 2007. Dr. Herro was asked to join their faculty because of his extensive and unique experience treating patients with special needs under anesthesia and sedation.

Almost five years ago when Dr. Herro joined the faculty at this prestigious dental school, he was the youngest faculty member to date. Dr. Herro’s youthful attitude combined with his many years of education and training prepared him for his best role: educator. Whether chair side spending time with patients and making sure they understand their treatment options to the university setting, Dr. Herro’s passion of educating others is undeniable.

“I strive to both be educated and to educate. I am always striving to learn new techniques and better my current ones in an effort to enhance my abilities. I enjoy teaching upcoming dentists how to serve a patient population that is underserved.” The underserved Dr. Herro often refers to is the special needs community. He states, “Patients with special needs, whether it be a complicated medical history, high anxiety or mental/physical disabilities, have difficulties finding dentists who can properly treat them. I find that I am successful with this patient demographic and enjoy educating younger dentists on how to do so.”

When asked about the aspects that Dr. Herro likes most about dentistry, his care and compassion for others surfaced. “I enjoy treating all different types of patients and performing many different procedures. However, I like to focus on treating those patients who have difficulties finding a dentist they are comfortable with. Most of my patients have various levels of fears and anxiety and are unable to find a dentist who can accommodate their needs. I feel this is where our practice and staff excels.”

Dr. Herro takes his profession seriously and is driven by his passion for people. His compassion, talent, education and unique skills have prepared him to take on a highly needed demographic…those with special needs and/or those who face dental anxiety. His experience with the elderly to the young has made him a doctor of all trades performing all types of dental procedures from the basic to the complicated.
