Do your teeth hurt when you eat something too hot, or too cold, or too hard? If your food isn’t just right, does eating become a painful experience? You don’t have to keep suffering. Use our tips to help sensitive teeth.
Brush the Right Way
Brushing too hard can irritate already-sensitive teeth. Make sure you’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and make sure you’re not brushing too hard. Hard brushing can actually wear away at your tooth enamel, making your teeth even more sensitive.
Also make sure you’re brushing along the gumline at a 45-degree angle, rather than straight on. You want to remove plaque, not enamel!
Watch What You Eat
Acidic foods are some of the worst culprits for wearing down tooth enamel. Avoiding soda and sticky or hard candy can both improve your diet and the health and sensitivity of your teeth. Instead, stick to healthy snacks like dairy and high-fiber fruits and vegetables, and drinks like tea and our favorite dental-friendly standby, water.
Steer Clear of Whitening Treatments on Sensitive Teeth
Whitening toothpastes and treatments can increase the sensitivity of your teeth. While the sensitivity from these treatments is usually temporary, it’s still unpleasant and can be easily avoided.
Address Teeth Clenching
If you clench or grind your teeth at night, you could be irritating the nerves of your teeth. If you suspect you mind grind your teeth, consider using a mouth guard.
Take Care of Other Dental Problems
Gum disease, cavities, and other dental problems can definitely make your teeth hurt. If you think you could be suffering from one of these conditions, make an appointment with your dentist right away. There’s no use suffering any longer than you have to.
